RPS: Change of Heart

(Anonymous) 2013-04-02 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Different prompter from the one on the first page, but I came here with a similar idea: I'd love a story where Jim slowly comes to realize that John is in love with Harold. Like, not that directing choices are being imposed on him that might be interpreted that way -- that his *own* understanding of the character is heading in that direction, and he's torn between his authenticity as an actor and the stereotypes that his church has been selling him.

(Oh Jim, just come on over to the progressive end of Christianity, already. You can still love Jesus and not be a dick! You know you want to.)

FILL: Change of Heart (Jim Caviezel, Reese/Finch) [General] [RPS, No meme warnings apply]

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's not hot—it's not even warm. Or tea, for that matter. Just a paper cup with enough water to give it some weight, and a lid. But Richard just said action, and Jim's already eased back into John—slow and easy, like he always does—and so it's Sencha green tea, and it's Harold hunched over the keyboard, now half-turning with his whole upper torso the way Harold has to in order to look at him, examining the cuts and bruises and the dirty shirt that will be the result of the car explosion they will film on Friday.

The cuts and the bruises are superficial, a little extra time in the make-up chair that morning, but the script says John will be thrown from the car when it explodes, landing on his back on the sidewalk, and so John will feel the deep ache of heavy bruises low on his back, and Jim moves stiffly because of those. Despite the aches, John finds a smile—one of the small, teasing ones—for Harold, and sets the cup down on the table near his elbow.

"You look terrible," Harold says, although he picks up the cup and takes a hesitant sip to keep from burning his tongue.

"I'm fine," John says easily, easing himself into a chair.

"You're bleeding all over my chair," Harold says archly.

"Maybe we should take to wrapping the furniture in plastic," John teases him.

Harold begins rising stiffly from his chair. "And maybe you could try to avoid getting yourself blown up any more than is absolutely—"

"Cut!"

Jim turns in the direction of the crew.

"Sorry, guys. We're getting some weird feedback on the sound. Give us a few minutes."

"Everyone take five," one of the PA calls out.

Michael straightens and reaches his arms high over his head, groaning with pleasure. "Oh, god, that feels good." He twists his torso to the left and then the right, and then leans forward, touching his fingers to his toes. "At this rate I'm gonna have to spend all weekend on the chiropractor's table."

Jim wanders over to his chair, picking up the day's pages. He reads over the scene again. John brings Harold tea. Harold fusses over John's cuts and bruises. John teases him about worrying too much.

Harold turns away from John. He is CLEARLY feeling his concern deeply but attempting to hide his concern from John.

HAROLD

You'll have to excuse me, Mr. Reese, but I find I don't care to lose anymore people who are important to me.

"Want to run lines?" Michael's settling in the chair next to him, a cup of black coffee balanced on his knee.

Jim shook his head.

John is visibly moved. He walks hesitantly toward Harold, reaching out his hand, but STOPS SHORT of touching his arm.

JOHN

Harold?

It's there, right there in the pages. Jim doesn't know why he hasn't seen it before. Doesn't know why nobody's said anything to him about it. About his character, about Harold, about their relationship—

Or well. Maybe he does.

"Something wrong?" Michael asks. He's been reading email but now he's looking at Jim.

Jim swallows hard. He shakes his head.

"Something wrong with the script?"

He shakes his head again. "No. Just—" He looked at Michael. "You know how it is. Just sometimes you see something you didn't see before."

"Hmm." Michael studied him, then looked down at his iPad again. "If it's anything you need to talk about—" he said, and Jim knew he was being careful to sound off-handed.

"No." He cleared his throat. "No, it's nothing."

"Okay, Jim, Michael." Richard's calling them over again. "I think we've got it fixed. Let's go again."

Michael walks over to Harold's chair. He's limping by the time he gets there, twisted and stiff, and it takes him a moment to settle. Jim studies him. Takes a deep breath.

John knows today is a bad day. That Harold's hurting. The cup of tea is just the right side of hot in his hand, and he's glad he took the few extra minutes to stop and get it.

His cuts and the bruises are superficial, a little extra time in the make-up chair for Jim that morning, but John was thrown from the car in the explosion and he's feeling the deep ache from heavy bruises low on his back. He moves stiffly and he feels like he understands a little better what it's like for Harold, every day. He finds a smile—and it's small, almost hesitant—and he sets the cup down on the table near his elbow.

"You look terrible," Harold says, and Michael picks up the cup and takes a hesitant sip as if to keep from burning his tongue.

"I'm fine," John says. His eyes meet Harold's briefly, and then dart away just as fast, but he takes a seat anyway, easing himself down into a chair. He can feel the color rise just a bit in his face, and he raises his eyes again, and this time they hold.

Michael's eyes widen, just briefly, almost unnoticeably, and then something moves in them. Something approving. Harold clears his throat. "You're bleeding all over my chair," he complains.

"Maybe we should take to wrapping the furniture in plastic." It's a weak joke and John knows it. His throat feels so dry and he wishes he'd bought himself some tea as well.

Harold begins rising stiffly from his chair and John's hand twitches as he keeps himself from reaching out to steady him. To touch him. "Maybe you could try to avoid getting yourself blown up any more than is absolutely necessary."

"Define necessary," John says. He realizes quickly it's wrong thing to say. "I'm sorry, I—"

Harold turns away from him. It's clear he doesn't want John to see what he's feeling, but John thinks maybe they're beyond that now.

"You'll have to excuse me, Mr. Reese, but I find I don't care to lose anymore people who are important to me." He seems to be holding his breath, waiting for John's reaction.

John walks hesitantly toward him, reaching out his hand, but he stops short of touching his arm. "Harold?"

Harold takes a deep breath and turns back to face him. He lifts his head and looks at John squarely.

John meets his eyes fearlessly, even as Jim shakes inside.

Thank you so much! I wrote it as a standalone so no, no present plans to continue or expand upon it. If there was something specific you wanted to see, let me know and I'll see if I can come up with something.

Wow. This is a really compelling and interesting twist on viewing the Finch/Reese relationship, using an additional (meta)fictional layer. Kudos to both author and prompter. I will confess to being surprised by how much I liked it (but that's always the best way!)

Oh this is beautifully done. It's such an interesting idea to see Jim's reaction when he realizes the relationship between Reese and Finch. Do you plan to continue this story?

Not really--I did write this as a standalone and so don't have any present plans to continue, but as I said to the other commenter above, if there's something specific you're interested in seeing, let me know and I'll see if I can expand upon it in a direction you'd enjoy.

And thank you!

Original prompter here: I thought there was zero chance of anyone picking up on this prompt, and I'm so happy with the way it turned out! The framework you chose for the story works perfectly -- two takes of the scene with just a handful of little differences between them, yet those details add up to something so crucial. I love it.

I really love how smoothly you switch from Jim to John and back. Jim's holding a cup of water but John has a cup of tea, John loves Harold but Jim is the only one afraid. Very well done, I come to check on the kink meme and end up rereading this fill. :) I really enjoyed it. Thanks.

This is really well done. I love that you picked that particular scene for Caviezel to realize "okay, John is in love with Finch" because it's so slashy in between Reese's (positively flirty) tone of voice and remembering a complicated tea order that I ended up rewinding and rewatching it several times. So it's an appropriate time for Jim to realize what John's feeling.
